Zhang Jun, vice-president of Supreme People's Court, said the number of people executed will be reduced considerably, because in future the court intends to give more to the death penalty with suspension.
Zhang said the Chinese newspaper China Daily, quoted by the BBC,
that the legislation will be enhanced, so as to reduce the number of
death sentences and limit the use of this punishment. Currently, the
death penalty applies to crimes such as tax evasion or embezzlement,
but the Court will try to determine the application of punishment only
if very serious crimes.
After two years, China has given the Supreme Court the right to review death sentences set by other judicial forums, and this decision has already resulted in decreasing the number of executions.
According to human rights activists, China is a country with the highest number of executions in the world. Amnesty International has announced that in 2008 China executed 1.718 people, that is 72% of the total execution globally.
But China does not publish statistics of the number of people sentenced to death and the number of people executed. However, in September 2007 when the People's Supreme Court has the right to review cases, Chinese state media said that the execution is the lowest in the last 10 years.
