German Justice suspend ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon

German Constitutional Court on Tuesday suspended the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, demanding the adoption of a law that guarantees the rights of german parliament, AFP reports.

The judges have confirmed that the Treaty is compatible with the Basic Law (constitution), but estimated that some laws should adjust the parameters. Specifically, judges have held that the Lisbon Treaty threatens sovereignty of Germany, but believed that the rights of co-decision of Parliament shall be stated clearly in a separate law.

The decision will negatively impact the timetable for the ratification of the Treaty in the 27 EU Member States. The Constitutional Court declared that however confident "german parliament will quickly overcome this last obstacle in the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.
